This Saturday, June 18, the Piedmont Pepper Pods and friends will once again take over Central Park for the Ninth Annual Bull City Chili Challenge. There will be winners in four categories: Texas Style, Freestyle, Restaurant and Junior. And there will be a salsa competition.

Durham Spirits Company, a new space for culinary and mixology classes, is celebrating their grand opening on Saturday, June 25th from 11am-2pm. Durham Spirits Company is the brain child of Kate Coleman, a South Carolina native and Durham transplant, and is located in an Old North Durham historic home. During the event, you’ll have the chance to learn more about the company and to sign up for classes. There will also be gift certificate giveaways, kids’ cookie decorating, and food demos.

Once concentrated in Raleigh, Beltline Brew Tours will now provide brewery tours of Fullsteam Brewery, Triangle Brewing Company, and Bull City Burger and Brewery one Saturday a month in Durham. The next scheduled tour is Saturday, June 11th. On the tour, you will learn about each brewery and enjoy beer samples. Now in its 4th year, Triangle Restaurant Week returns to the area with three-course prix-fixe meals at $15 for lunch and $20 or $30 for dinner. Sponsored by Triangle Blvd., a local new media and creative services firm, the event will take place during the week of June 6th – 12th, 2011. Participating restaurants include establishments in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and of course, Durham, as well as in Cary, Wake Forest, Morrisville, Apex, and Fuquay-Varina.

Downtown Durham’s Beloved Community Free Picnic & Resource Fair
On Saturday, May 21st, Urban Ministries will host a community picnic, resource fair, and food drive in downtown Durham. For those who are unfamiliar with Urban Ministries, they are a local organization whose mission is to provide food, clothing, shelter, and supportive services to those who need it.

This coming Saturday (May 7) there’s a Craft-in-a-Can party at our favorite beer store, Sam’s Quik Shop. From 12-4pm there will be food trucks and a celebration of craft beers that are sold in cans.
Food trucks will include Bulkogi Korean BBQ, Slip and Sliders, Farmhand Foods, and more. You will be able to enjoy beers in Sam’s Quik Shop lot just bring along a koozie.

This Saturday, April 30, Club Blvd. Elementary School is holding their annual spring carnival fundraiser, the Manatee Mayfair. There will be carnival games, raffles, music and of note for Carpe Durham readers – a cake walk.
We went last year and it was a fun event for families with small children. The cake walk was was amusing and your odds of winning the cake of your choice are pretty good. Cakes are donated by local restaurants and school families.

Triangle Food Bloggers Unite to Help End Childhood Hunger
On May 14, 2011, Johanna Kramer and Matt Lardie will host the Triangle’s first food bloggers bake sale to help end childhood hunger. As part of the Great American Bake Sale, food bloggers from across the country will hold bake sales in their respective states where all generated monies will be donated to Share our Strength, an organization that seeks to end childhood hunger by connecting youth with nutritious food.

Eleni Vachos, of Bull City Vegan Challenge, is launching another endeavor to move Bull City residents toward meatless eats, at least one day a week. As part of the national movement, she has created Triangle Meatless Mondays and is encouraging restaurants to commit to offering a vegan item and eaters to pledge to abstain from meat on Mondays to promote healthier amounts of meat consumption and a more sustainable food system. The official launch of Triangle Meatless Mondays is on Earth Day, 4/22.
