Food Truck Fiesta on Sunday

Posted by RPP 2 Jun 2010 12 Comments

According to this Facebook page and this N&O blog entry, the following food trucks will be parking outside of Sam’s from 11:30am-3pm on Sunday (6/6/10):  Only Burger, Indian Food on Wheels, Daisy Cakes, Bulkogi Korean BBQ To Go, Parlez-Vous Crepe and Mom’s Delicious Dishes.

Cool.

I would urge all who are interested in attending this to RSVP as Attending on their Facebook page. This will give the truckers a guideline of how many people to expect, and hopefully not run out of food too early.

FYI that facebook link doesn’t work.

Can something be too successful? Every truck was slammed. Really long lines. It was good though. Hope they do it again.

Yeah, this was a great idea, but boy was it crowded. The 93-degree heat didn’t help either. A couple more trucks might help ease lines. I was surprised that there were no Mexican taco trucks there, since there are quite a few of those around town. Maybe next time?

The red truck that had the Indian sign on it was in fact a Mexican food truck. They had burritos, tacos and tortas in several meats and veggie.

I do wish that the facebook event RSVP had been checked out by the trucks. I checked it and it said 500+ had RSVPed and I’d say there were 500 plus 200. They all said they had no idea what to expect.

Actually, at one point there were about 2,000 people out there. The FB count was waaay off and wouldn’t have helped. A lot of people went who didn’t RSVP. The vendors I talked to were flabbergasted, and they were all doing the best they could.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought they were serving only Indian food from the red bus. The line had about 40 people in it when I left so I didn’t get to check it out up close.

i have to give MAD PROPS to Sam’s for hosting this, they are poineers and really got these trucks some visibility. but truth be told, its a small hot parking lot with an a$$load of people there.

hopefully, they’ve done their bit at getting the ball rolling, and these trucks can take up an occasional residence at a more spread out location.

I stopped by yesterday at 2:30. Most of the trucks were sold out, and the few that were left with food had lines 20 deep.

I think that an event like this would do great on a weekly basis. Of course, not everyone would show up every week, but it would be great to know that I could wake up each Sunday morning and get some truck food for lunch.

Also, I think that this event would be great for downtown. I like Sam’s a lot, but the venue just isn’t suited for that many trucks. If food trucks turned out to W Main St and W Chapel Hill St, then folks could get their food and find a table at the CCB plaza or Five Points. In fact, perhaps someone could get DDI and the city to work together on making a little outdoor picnic plaza in the green space next to Bull McCabe’s. Of course, this plan only works if most of the trucks don’t need shore power to run, which I know the Taqueria Rubio truck uses in its Indian configuration.

We went around 12:30 and it was jam packed. Each line for each truck snaked all around and intermixed with the other lines. We realized it would be about an hour wait, which in the heat and crowd didn’t sound like a great idea. We left and had Jimmy Johns instead. Very disappointing.

    Next time, they need to:

    1. Have it in a park or something with some shade. That hot asphalt was killing me.

    2. Spread the trucks out more!

    3. Get more trucks there.

    4. Pick a spot with ample parking.
