China Star

Good news for those of you, who like me, are addicted to Bahn’s
Wednesday/Saturday tofu special. I inevitably find myself, as I’m guessing
most do, craving that sweet, fried tofu dish on days when it’s not
available. Well, I have finally found a dish in Durham, while no where close
to beauty that is Bahn’s black bean sauce, that at least takes the edge off
my craving.
China Star is a classic, back-lit pictures above the register, take-out
Chinese place. It shares a strip mall with a nail salon and a Little
Ceaser’s Pizza. It’s near the West Point on the Eno out on Roxborro
road. On their menu, hidden amid the classic Chinese take-out fare, is a
dish called “Home-style Bean Curd.”
For $5.86, you get a large portion of tofu and vegetables that is enough to feed
three hungry adults. The tofu, like Bahn’s, is light and fluffy and fried
until golden. It comes in a brown sauce that is a little bit sweet and a
little bit spicy. The veggies are the classic take-out Chinese veggies -
broccoli, carrots, snow peas, celery and onion. Rice and fortune cookies are
also included for your $5.86. It’s a whale of a deal.
I’m curious if their other dishes outshine the other fast/cheap Chinese
places in the area but I haven’t been able to force myself to order anything
other than the Home Style Bean Curd. . . but maybe next time.
Bonus: They don’t use MSG.

Interesting….
I adore the Home Style Bean Curd at China Palace (Old Durham-Chapel Hill Rd. and Garrett Rd.). Just another option when you’re in the mood!

Note: It actually only costs $5.85 and the portion picture above is about 1/4 of what they give you.

I’ve had their sweet and sour chicken and chicken with broccoli. Both are very good. The s/s chicken is the “pour over” style, but better than most. The chicken with broccoli is in a brown sauce. The combination specials are enough for two meals. The egg rolls are excellent!
