Silver Spoon
We’ve eaten at Silver Spoon many times over the last year or so, but almost always for breakfast. When you walk in the door, you’re greeted by smiling wait staff that almost always will call you “sugar”, “hon” or some other endearing term. It’s usually filled with a wide range of people, all regulars I’m sure. Everyone seems to know who everyone else is and you’ll get a smile from anyone (including customers) you make eye contact with. In a time where everything feels so rushed and impersonal, Silver Spoon is a nice change of pace.
A departure from our usual choice of breakfast, we got take out for dinner last week. I ordered the shrimp dinner which comes with two sides and hushpuppies. I opted for turnip greens and mac n cheese. The sides were not much to speak of, but the hushpuppies were sweet and moist and the shrimp (cooked calabash style) had a light batter and were juicy and flavorful. None of the fried items were greasy either.

For my husband I ordered the classic burger. It was smothered in onions, red and green peppers and gobs of melted jack and cheddar. It came with fries, but they happily subbed fried okra for him. He noted that the burger was overwhelmed by the toppings and that he prefers the burger to be more prominent. He enjoyed the fried okra.

When I phoned in our order, I was tempted by that night’s special of fried green tomatoes for $1.80 so we shared an order of those. They were fried in the same light batter that the shrimp was so it was a little untraditional (no breadcrumbs) in my experience, but you really can’t beat the price. They were perfectly cooked too. We also split a piece of chocolate cake a la mode. The cake, though it looked good, was kind of sad and dry.
For a total of $18 for two entrees, an appetizer and dessert, we felt that Silver Spoon offers a great value with a decent selection for dinner options. I have had the fried chicken and so far, it’s a tie between that and the shrimp for my favorite non-breakfast item. I urge you to try out breakfast or brunch there. I definitely prefer them to Eno River Eatery for North Durham breakfast.

WHY do otherwise good places insist on serving on styrofoam, even for dining-in? It nearly kills the experience for me at so many places. Even Francesca’s serves their soup in styrofoam, which is just crazy. So wasteful and cheap-feeling!

BTW, serving with plastic and styrofoam is especially ironic at a place called “Silver Spoon”.

These photographs are of our take-out order. When dining in, you get real plates and silverware. They even have jars of jam on the table, not the little packets

Whew, thank goodness. Sorry for jumping to conclusions!

I have eaten there several times and everything has been good, especially the chicken and dumplings (although where I come from we call it chicken and pastry). Jen is right, everyone there including the owner are very nice people. A good place to go for quiet, slow paced meal.

I will have to try it
As someone else has said Elmos prices are crazy high
If someone with breakfast talents were to open a breakfast only spot in Durham they would do quite well

I’ve only eaten there once and somehow I remember it as being ok, but kind of dirty/run-down. We go to Eno River Eatery usually bc they are so friendly with my 15 month old daughter. Am I remembering incorrectly?

Dirty and run-down aren’t how I would categorize Silver Spoon. Does the bathroom floor sparkle? Would I let my daughter crawl around on the floor? No, but I wouldn’t at any restaurant. Not much effort has been put into the decor and it’s very obvious that it was a pizza hut, but the tables and dishes have always been clean in my experience and they are always very sweet to my daughter as well. Perhaps give them another try?

I might be exposing my lack of southern food knowledge, but what are the fried round disks just beyond the shrimp?
[Reply]
I think those are Ye Olde Fried green Tomatoes mentioned above
[Reply]
They are indeed the fried green tomatoes!
[Reply]
Ah, yes, you would think I’d be able to figure that out. Thanks, guys.

YUMS YUMS! This looks great. I’m in Chapel Hill, never heard of this fine dining establishment but I obviously need to get over there. I lived on fried okra when I was in high school in Alabama. Love that you can sub okra for fries. I’ll check this out, tks! http://victuspopuli.com/

I’ve eaten there many times for breakfast and once for dinner. I had the beef gyro and fries with string beans. It was ok. I’ve had better but it was a friendly atmosphere. I usually go for breakfast. The breakfast croissant is to die for (eggs with cheese on top and bacon in a buttery croissant). I like Eno Bakery as well for breakfast but my mom prefers Silver Spoon.

I will never “die for” any food.
