Red Sea Fish & Chicken
Red Sea Chicken & Fish (2000 Chapel Hill Road Unit #4) is located in the Lakewood Shopping Center and bills itself as Durham’s spot for calabash seafood and fried chicken.

The menu offers sandwiches, chicken platters, and wide variety of fish dinners which can be ordered fried, broiled or grilled. In the fish category you can get whiting, trout, catfish, flounder, tilapia, catfish nuggets, croaker, oysters, scallops, shrimp, or clam strips. If you opt for chicken you have the choice of whole wings, tenders, nuggets, or gizzards.
I went with the fried tilapia dinner ($7.79) which comes with hushpuppies and a choice of two sides.

The tilapia was lightly breaded, fried nicely, and well-seasoned. The fish was good on its own, but it was especially tasty once I doused it with some malt vinegar that was sitting on the table. The hushpuppies were good, and the canned green beans serviceable, but the mac and cheese was strangely dry and flavorless.
Since I had tried out the “fish” part of the restaurant’s namesake, my dining partner saw to it that some “chicken” was sampled as well. Due to her long running search for a good chicken philly in Durham, it was an easy ordering decision when she saw it on the menu.

The chicken philly ($4.99) is served on an 8 inch roll with lettuce, tomato, onions mushrooms, green peppers and mayo. During lunch hours the chicken philly is available as a combo which comes with hushpuppies, choice of two sides and 16 ounce drink for $6.49, which is a bargain, but we had just missed the 3:00pm cut-off for lunch so we just ordered a side of fries. The fries were your standard crinkle cut variety but these had been sprinkled with a touch of Old Bay seasoning. The sandwich, though, was really good. The roll was nice and crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, the fillings were all cooked just right and the cheese didn’t overpower the whole affair. Winner, winner, chicken…philly dinner?!
The owners were pretty friendly and seemed really interested in making sure that everything was to our liking when we had finished our food. I’m already looking forward to a return trip for some whole buffalo wings!
Hours:
Monday – Thursday 11:00am to 9:00pm

Does the Red Sea name indicate a conection (other than location) with the Blue Nile Ethiopian restaurant which previously occupied the same space (with Doug’s Seafood there between Blue Nile and Red Sea).

Well.. I just finished a 5 piece buffalo wing dinner and a hot dog from this fine establishment. So if anyone is wondering, the wings are bit on the small side but sold whole wing as stated earlier (all three sections). Lightly breaded and fried pretty hard, the wing sauce was okay but overall not real contender for best hot wings in Durham or anything like that. Hot dog was standard fare.
Still a good proposition price-wise; a whole wing is only 89c, not a bad price. I can see this Red Sea being a good place to go if you have a hankering for some plain old fried wings, although the fish is more likely the focus of this place.

Okay I ordered a philly steak & cheese without the mushrooms and it was delicious.I also got 2 hotdogs and fries. The coleslaw is not the best but its still good but regardless everything was GREAT. I would give it a 4/4. Its a new restaurant and I definitely recommend it.
