Let's just say that once they figured out what they got themselves involved in they wanted to get out asap. Gary did you also come after the new banner? Did you honestly try the place out even after they got 100% control of it? I started working there as soon as they stated cooking. When the police came in one night and suggested they close at 11 due to the crime then they took the advice. And Gary it is rather obvious you have never worked in the industry. There are plenty of people who wanted to eat for free. They were really really trying at the end but due to the increased crime and the fact that nobody embraced them they gave up. I for once will be working with them again in their new location in Raleigh.

There were some vocal critics on the internet, but the internet is full of jerks. I had a sense that the other post was dominated by one or two people with some kind of an axe to grind.

I can personally tell you why it took me so long to go there initially: location. It really is a poor location coming from downtown, in a Bermuda triangle of abandoned commercial structures surrounded by highways. It's stark.

If this place had been near brightleaf or downtown, I would've tried it months ago, and I'd probably have been a regular. But out there in commercial no-man's land, it just wasn't happening.

I don't think anyone *wants* to "eat for free." It's a stressful thing when you have to call a restaurant out when they serve you unacceptable food and expect you to pay for it. When people go out to eat, they just want to have a pleasant meal and not deal with that kind of crap. By all accounts the food and service at George's was extremely uneven. Blaming customers for that kind of inconsistency is just wrong.

And why should they have stayed open? For what? I was working there for the last five months. They even gave me extra work on the side with their other business in Raleigh. The problems that they encountered there I have never seen anywhere else.

1. Everyone wanted to eat for free. Everyone was trying to find excuses about the food so they can get it for free. It was repulsive. They thought and compared it to the waffle house.

2. The building was old and had a lot of mechanical problems. Eerything other day they had another technitian fixing something

3. It was not worth it. The area was not suitable for a restaurant of that sort. Same goes for Bergama next door. Durham does not deserve anything remotely close to that restaurant. It was not embraced. Not even when the owners started cooking themselves. Now everyone can go back to the Waffle House and Honeys. But don't complain about the food or the service. That's what Durham deserves.

I was very disappointed to see George's Diner gone when we stopped by on Sunday. We had just finally gotten a chance to check it out a few weeks ago liked it; at least as good as Elmo's with prices half as steep (and open 24 hours!)

Anybody know the whole story? When we ate there the heat was out, and this past Sunday there were signs on the door saying "closed for heat repair, we'll reopen soon" or something to that effect. However, the "for rent" signs up front kind of contradicted that optimism.

It's moot- the diner is closed- there's a "For Rent" sign on the window now, and it's closed/ lights off (with no one answering the phone) on a Saturday night.
