Good, Better, Best Desserts and Cafe

Way down 55, right before you reach RTP, is Good, Better, Best Desserts and Cafe, Durham’s newest bakery. Although they aren’t going to take much business from Guglhupf, their healthy approach and inventive cookies are a welcome change of pace.

They’re still trying to get the word out, so their selection is currently limited to sandwiches, muffins, and cookies. We went for the banana pecan and carob chip muffins, a handful of cookies, and some super-spicy ginger tea.

Since she doesn’t use any refined sugar, additves, etc., the muffins are a bit drier and denser than what you’d normally expect.  The honey yogurt or carrot currant muffins sound like they would work better than the more straightforward ones we ordered.

I really enjoyed the cookies, especially the molasses and date nut turtle ones. These aren’t huge, soft cookies — in fact, the granola cookie is more of an energy bar — but the “healthy” bakery angle works best for the less sweet items.

They also serve corned beef, pastrami, and turkey sandwiches from 11-3, for $8.50 a piece.  All in all, Good, Better, Best reminded me a lot of Bull City Bakery, but without one killer item like BCB’s pound cake. That being said, if you’re in the area, stop by and pick up some tea and cookies. You can also call ahead and place an order for cakes and pies, including carrot cake, cheesecake, and what has to be a first for Durham, butternut squash pie. Have you guys had this before?

I stopped by for the first time today. I bought a dozen cookies. Before I got back to my office I had tried the pecan, cinnamon and molasses. All delicious. I decided to wait to try the oatmeal raisin until later so I still had a chance of eating my lunch.

Went there today for a sandwich. The “spicy” tuna on croissant was great. I’m told that the only thing that the owner doesn’t make is the bread for the sandwiches, but she does source the bread locally. The dressing and slaw-like topping that went on the tuna were spiced with a bit of jalapeno, set off by something sweet (apple, maybe) and crunchy cabbage slaw. It was a great sweet / spicy / savory combo. There’s only four or five choices for sandwiches, but its a nice RTP alternative when you just can’t take another bite of chain food.

While I’m there, I can’t resist a dozen cookies – to share, of course. I’m mostly through them all myself already.

Went today, never noticed it as I rarely drive down Alston Ave. I had the molasses cookie and carob chip cookies… both were to die for!! They weren’t super soft, but weren’t hard either… Perfectly in between.

I also tried the mini cheesecakes…(I meant to share but…) which sat on a really cute doily in the plastic container (nice and different). The texture was amazing.

What really made my visit was meeting Mr. Holder(?) the owner’s father. He is so proud of their baked goods and even more proud of his daughter. I felt so welcome and he was sooo very friendly.

I will be returning to work from there as they offer free wifi to enjoy the atmosphere, cookies (maybe sweet potato pie) and some coffee! Oh, and I’ll blog about it too. This place has to go on the “Coffee Shopping Durham” blog. Cheers!
