MEZ,

See http://carpedurham.com/2008/03/21/bleg-where-can-galanga-be-found-in-durham

It looks like fresh ginger.

WF in Chapel Hill regularly has it, but I think the one in Durham stopped carrying it.

This particular post is specifically referencing the Compare Foods store on Avondale Drive off North Roxboro Rd. The Compare store on University Drive, of course, does not have a hot bar.

Thanks for the update! I definitely need to remember their fine produce section when I'm looking for an unusual ingredient for my cooking. I've been on the hunt for galangal, a root used in some southeast Asian cooking forever and have yet to find it (not knowing what it looks like doesn't really help). Perhaps I'll see if Compare might have it!

Noted yesterday on a visit to Compare that they've got a hot food bar and table area up and running! i noted some homespun favorites on the hot food bar, lots of bean and rice based dishes, yuca, meats, etc. signs hanging over the bar noted they also had standards of tacos, sopes, and the like. being that is was a weekend day, there was the customary "We have menudo" sign hanging there.

for people that dont visit compare often, i'll remind that you are likely to find alot of non-mexican/central american fare, most of what i saw on the bar was of a caribbean (dominican/PR/Cuban) feel, since the chain is dominican owned, but they seem to have consistently appealed to the whole of the latino populace since they've been in business by offering it all.

on a side note, Compare has vastly expanded their produce to include lots more ethnic staples from asian cultures, among other things. have been seeing mounds of fresh thai chilis, bitter melons, a variety of asian greens, caribbean callaloo, and a vast growing selection of bunched fresh herbs such as basil, oregano and dill.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Bushwick IMPACT is a community-based family resource center that increases children’s potential for success by investing in parents. IMPACT offers child development supports, family support, family literacy and leadership development services to families with children, birth through age eight. IMPACT families build on their strengths to address challenging life circumstances as proactive and engaged citizens.

IMPACT is a Project of Agenda for Children Tomorrow, a 20 year public/private initiative that has 501(c) (3) FID # 13-2612524 status through the Fund for the City of New York. IMPACT takes a comprehensive approach to family well-being, offering parents the concrete information and direct assistance they need to access early care and education opportunities, as well as to address the continuum of concerns faced by families struggling to raise children in challenging circumstances.

Our goal is to make early learning a priority for every small child in Bushwick!

Every moment in a child’s life can be a learning moment.
Please help us make our BORN LEARNING campaign a success.

We are in the process of training neighborhood mothers to be part of a brand new team of Parent Ambassadors for the Born Learning Campaign. IMPACT’s 15 Parent Ambassadors will be volunteering their time to go out and bring information and knowledge to their peers throughout the Bushwick community. They will help other parents to better understand and support their children’s development.

We would be extremely grateful for any help you are able to offer us so that Parent Ambassador Volunteers can be recognized for their time and efforts.

We welcome donations in the form of gift certificates, gift cards, movie tickets, household items or goods appropriate for children (clothes, toys, books, crayons) – anything useful for families raising children.

Your support will be so important in showing Parent Ambassadors how much the Bushwick community appreciates their leadership and their success as role models.

We will recognize your sponsorship of this program by citing you on our website (www.bushwickimpact.org) and by making sure that all 450 families we serve are aware of your support. Also, any donations you make to us can be used as a tax deduction for your organization.

Thank you for your consideration and interest.

Sincerely,

Loren Miller
Director
