Kings Red and White is the ONLY place I know of to buy sugar cubes and on Thursdays (and Sundays?) they receive Pepperidge Farm breads which they sell for 99 cents a loaf. Look for the cutest little red and white potatoes you've ever seen!

We used to buy our specialty (southern) cuts of meat from the Red & White on University Drive. When it closed, we switched to King's. A popular buy is their country breakfast sausage. If you buy the hot variety, be prepared, it's loaded with red pepper flakes.

The butcher that commented on the lovely ladies, had to be Artis. He has been around for many years and is quite famous for his meat cutting abilities. However he is most famous for his personality and his attention to every customer. Mr. King, the store owner, has a gem in Artis.

Definitely didn't mean to imply buying groceries is uncool--in fact, the opposite. I'm just too lazy to cook for myself. (And I don't speak for anyone else at carpedurham when I say that.)

They were so friendly at the R&W, I agree. The cashier talked to us about Duke basketball and the butcher said we were looking lovely.

is there something suddenly "uncool" about buying groceries? lol

incidentally, they have an amazing selection of collards for .79/lb! when they get their initial shipments, peole line up outside the door! half their fruit/veggie selection is locally grown amd marked as such.

Cashiers actually remember you after a couple of visits, and there's always a kid to take your stuff to your car.
